AKWA IBOM SEEKS FG’S SUPPORT TO BOOST HEALTH SECTOR

Governor Udom Emmanuel ?of Akwa Ibom State has called on the Federal Government to establish a standard diagnostic laboratory in the state to facilitate the diagnosis of diseases and save the people the cost of seeking such services elsewhere, as it would complement medical infrastructure such as the Ibom Specialist Hospital to boost the health sector in the state and the nation at large. Emmanuel stated this in Uyo at the weekend during a courtesy call by Prof. Isaac Adewole, Minister of Health, who was on a two-day working visit to the state. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to partner with the Federal Government to end Nigerians’ medical tourism to foreign countries. Emmanuel said his administration has also tried to ensure that primary and secondary health institutions in the state are upgraded to meet the ever-increasing health care needs of the people. He appealed to the minister to use the occasion of his working visit to re-appraise the services rendered at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital with a view to providing funds for improvement on the present facilities to meet the high influx of patients, put at 1,300 daily. Earlier, Adewole commended Emmanuel for the giant strides recorded in the health sector adding that the Federal Government was committed to the enhancement of the sector hence it decision to disburse $1.5 million to each state with significant budget line item on health.
