– Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Friday said the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme has been recognised by sincere Nigerians as the symbol of the nation’s unity. Wike stated this at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Batch “A’’ Orientation Course at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Nonwa-Gbam in Tai Local Government Area of the state.
Represented by Mr Kenneth Kobani, the Secretary to the State Government, the governor urged the corps members to further ensure the unity of the country in their places of primary assignments. “In spite of the diverse ethnic nationalities and cultural affiliations, the benefit of staying together as one indivisible entity has since been recognised by all sincere Nigerians.
“You are therefore the most potent tool in bringing about the much desired national unity, even in the face of current challenges,” he said. Wike reminded the corps members that the one year national service was a call for sacrifice from them with a greater sense of dedication. He urged them to accept wherever they were posted to and see it as windows of opportunities to contribute their quota to the development of the nation.
“You must be challenged by the fact that your services are most needed and appreciated by the rural dwellers,” the governor said. Wike assured them that the state government would make their welfare and security a priority and provide the needed assistance to actualise the goals of the NYSC scheme. Mrs Ngozi Nwatarali, the NYSC State Coordinator, disclosed that 1,830 corps members would be posted to places of primary assignment at the close of the orientation course.(NAN
