Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Hon. Harrison Bethuel Iheanyichukwu, condemning the inadequate aspphalt laying during an inspection visit to the Eliozu road project site.

The Rivers State commissioner for works has called on the contractors handling the construction of various roads across the state to ensure quality project execution and redouble their efforts so as to deliver the projects before the deadline stipulated.

The Rivers State commissioner for works, Hon. Harrison Bethuel Iheanyichukwu, yesterday Thursday 13th May 2016, gave the call while on a massive inspection tour which saw him visiting so many of the numerous road projects embarked upon by the state government led by His Excellency, Chief (Barr.) Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON.

The commissioner who was accompanied by the permanent secretary of the ministry of works, Mr. James Enebeli, and the director of civil works in the state ministry of works, said that the early completion of the various road projects would lead to improvement of economic activities in these areas which were crippled before the present administration came on board.

While on inspection at the Eliozu Road project site, he was very angry with the quality of work being carried by the contractor. He particularly faulted and immediately stopped the laying of asphalt on sections of the Eliozu road due to the non-application of adequate Colas-A on the asphaltic binder by the contracting company.

The works commissioner also showed disappointment with the pace and quality of work done on the Ogbogoro road.

However, the commissioner expressed deep satisfaction with the level and progress of work done at the Rukpokwu-Eneka road handled by Messrs. JMS International Limited; Rumuokwurusi-Eneka-Igwuruta road handled by Lubriks Construction Company (LCC); Rumuepirikom-Eliparanwo road handled by CHARVET; Igwuruta-Chokocho road handled by SETRACO and Rumuagholu road handled by OKMAS.

He charged the contractors of these road projects to redouble their already commendable efforts in ensuring that the projects are delivered and ready for commissioning before May 29th 2016, when the Governor Wike led administration will be marking one successful year in office.

Addressing journalists after inspecting the progress of work at Eliozu road project site, the works commissioner said: “All road construction must be executed in accordance with quality assurance and the quality control standards enshrined in the governor’s NEW Rivers Vision.

“The days of delivering and commissioning sub-standard roads are gone. Any road constructed or rehabilitated by this administration must be durable and confidently stand the test of time.

“We must be thorough in all we do with tax payers money. I had to order to the stop of asphalt laying on this road because the contractor failed to apply adequate Colas-A on the asphaltic binder.

“This administration led by His Excellency, Chief (Barr.) Ezenwo Nyesom Wike is seriously committed to delivering the dividends of democracy and good governance to Rivers people, especially in the area of Road infrastructure.

“That is exactly why we have told these contractors to ensure they complete the roads and making it available for commissioning before May 29th 2016, when the governor will be celebrating one year of accountable and project-driven governance.

On his part, the site engineer gave assurances that the inadequate application of asphalt laying pointed out by the commissioner will be effected. He also confidently stated that the pace of work on the project will be improved without also compromising the quality of work and materials.

In just less than one week in office, the new commissioner for works has visited over ten road project sites in line with his promise to regularly be on field inspection to see the progress of work on projects firsthand.
