Amaechi’s comical insanity

By Simeon Nwakaudu

The two-day media tour by deflated and politically devalued Minister of Transportation and Former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi brings to the fore why the present administration is yet to take off after nine months.

With men like Amaechi wandering around the corridors of the Presidential Villa claiming to be critical to the management of affairs, we can but imagine the destructive policies being churned out to the detriment of Nigerians.

If anyone thought that Amaechi’s drunken rambling on AIT was bad, I wonder the description that would suit his misguided appearance on Rhythm FM and Love FM.

Amaechi exhibited unbecoming bitterness and psychological torment as he spoke on both stations. Though we could not see his face, we could feel the gnashing of teeth that ruined the radio appearances. He spoke like a criminal cornered by law enforcement agents, but given the last opportunity to insult his captors.

There was nothing in Amaechi’s conduct that depicted he has ever been educated. We are aware that he had a Pass degree and failed to graduate after studying for a law degree. However, nothing prepared us for Amaechi’s extreme show of shame and disregard for societal norm.

I thank the young lady who called and told Amaechi pointedly that she was embarrassed by the former governor’s irresponsibility and illiteracy. Amaechi tried to wave it away, but it was a highpoint.

Another take away was the confrontation between Amaechi and the President-General of GDI, Bright Amaewhule. This confrontation centred on the insanity of Amaechi and his refusal to adhere strictly to his drug regime. Amaewhule revealed that Amaechi’s Psychiatric doctor, Dr Sampson Parker was tired and frustrated by the fact that Amaechi was no longer responding to his psychiatric treatment. Amaechi struggled feebly to refute his insanity crisis.

Despite Amaechi’s feeble denial, it was obvious that he is struggling with a mental challenge. If not, why would the former governor celebrate the murder of Ogoni people by soldiers? If not, why would the former governor insult institutions of government directly under the purview of President Muhammadu Buhari?

If not for chronic psychiatric disorder why would Amaechi ask Governor Wike to resign over security challenges in some Rivers communities, when Nigeria as a country is passing through the worst genocides in North East, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, IPOB, Nasarawa, Lagos and nobody has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign?

It is acute psychiatric disorder that compels a man to equate eight years of failed governance to eight months of superlative performance. What Amaechi did in the course of his confessional media tour was to expose his mental incapacity to the world. His appreciation of time and value remains warped. In the course of his media tour, Amaechi forgot that Governor Wike is fixing his mess.

Amaechi in his ‘playing the ostrich’, thought that we have forgotten the ugly state he left Rivers State as at May 29, 2015. It took him over eight months to recover his lost voice.

Let us rejig Amaechi’s memory because not everyone suffers self-induced amnesia. First, Governor Wike cleared 3 months salary arrears owed civil servants by Amaechi. He also cleared 4 months pension arrears owed by the former governor. He cleared three years WAEC fees owed by the former governor and paid over N1 .5 billion as fees for students on foreign scholarships. He also kick-started the operation zero potholes programme to address roads infrastructural needs of all the four Local Government Areas that surround Port Harcourt. These were abandoned by Amaechi and their funds stolen to fund politics.

Amaechi kept on saying that he hates corruption. This appears to be a script from a night of a thousand laughs. What would have happened if Amaechi admits he is corrupt? A man who pocketed majority of the N3trillion that accrued to Rivers State during his eight year unproductive reign, is a very corrupt man. A man indicted by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry for selling state assets and pocketing the proceeds, is very corrupt.

Amaechi as Governor of Rivers State was so corrupt that he was too ashamed to write his handover notes. He was the only governor that ran out of Government House with not personally prepared record.

Amaechi’s ranting can be understood from an objective viewpoint. He has never passed an examination and is therefore incapable of logical reasoning. He failed at Rivers State University of Science and Technology before transferring to University of Port Harcourt where he failed again. The university authority was then ordered to issue him a Pass degree in English Language p for the length of time he spent in the school on compassionate ground. Amaechi later used Rivers State funds to sponsor himself to study law in London. That has been a wasted venture. After eight years, we still await Amaechi’s law degree.

Amaechi has survived in the political terrain by employing motor-park and market-women strategies. He shouts incoherently and fights without provocation. Because others are decent and would not engage in these senseless fights, they let Amaechi have his way. But in 2015, these tactics failed him. It will fail him again on March 19.

As a so-called Minister of Transportation, Amaechi declared on Radio that soldiers handed over to him for the purpose of rigging election will be used to disobey court orders. That is the height of insanity. We know Amaechi lacks respect, but to take his insanity to this level is unimaginable. How can a Federal Government official justify the planned disobedience of a court order? We know All Promises have been cancelled, but this is the worst form of impunity.

All through Amaechi’s regrettable media tour he made no mention of the achievements of the APC Federal Government in Rivers State or anywhere for that matter. All he boasted about was the release of soldiers to him for the purpose of tormenting Rivers people.

Amaechi again lied against Jonathan simply because he was appointed a Minister. Rivers State got the following appointments under Jonathan: 2 Federal Ministers; 2 MDs of NDDC, Chief of Army Staff, MD NERC, Chairman NIMC, EDFA NDDC, Chairman, Presidential Task Force on Power ,Chairman, Maritime Academy, Chairman, Niger Delta River Basin Dev. Authority, OSSAP-MDGs (Presidency) and Chairman, NEITI.

On March 19, the people will file out in unison to re-elect all PDP candidates. There is no room in Rivers State for a party that cancels promises and does no development projects. The era of bare-faced lies and propaganda is gone. In all states where rerun have been held, APC was rejected because the people now know the truth.

If Amaechi likes he should CHANGE to a radio talk-show presenter or become the Anchor of Focus Nigeria, the APC will lose Rivers State again.

My final word. Dr Sampson Parker should not be tired of CHANGING Amaechi’s medication. Each time he fails to treat Amaechi, it is Rivers State that suffers. Nigerians should hold Dr Parker responsible for Amaechi’s comical insanity.

The over blown social media acceptability of the candidature of Sen. Magnus Abe, in Ogoni, is a mare deceit. Come to think of it, the Sen. Abe we know has been at the corridor of power from the inception of the nascent Democracy in Nigeria but he has neither utilize his experiences and influence in the various positions he has occupied for the growth of Ogoni. He will only be remembered for the followings : *Banana plantation establishment which led to the death of many Ogonis due to the known negotiable approach between the land owners and the Government.

* Kpopie/Bodo road was awarded to be a dua carriage way, but the money for the expansion was pocketed and the road is till uncompleted today.

* The land dispute between Deken and Deeyor in Gokana LGA was masterminded by Sen.Magnus Abe for the purpose of aquaring those disputed-generating lands for personal use. Hence, he sited Deken people against Deeyor.

* During when he was Secretary to the Rivers State Government, he collected millions of naira from each chairman of the four LGAs of Ogoni, but was later resisted by Hon. Bariledum Mpigi of Tai LGA.

*He described himself as the only stick of matches that can light up Ogoni without which no leader existed. How true is this?

* He lied to have facilitated the construction of Bo-ue Road, when it’s clear that the said road was awarded by Governor Celestine Omehia and the road has not been completed till date.

*He lied to the Ogonis by claiming to be the sole person who brought Buhari to Ogoni during the campaign period , but forget to realise that Ogoni is an ethnic nationality that was founded on truth and sincerity, which has always attracted notable personalities due to our strategic position and the history of exploitation, which has spread round the world, attracting notable figures like the former President of America, President Bill Clinton, who visited Nigeria because of Ogoni. Was it also Magnus that brought President Olusegun Obasanjo to Ogoni?

*He medled into the activities of MOSOP and almost bakalnized it saved but the stiff resistance from Ogoni stakeholders, he would have succeded with his evil plans.

He is already now on the lying spree telling the Ogonis that the UNEP report, which is still in the process of implementation, was facilitated by him. Who knows whether if Abe won, the process will hang as the purpose for which the Minister came has not been realised? How are the Ogonis convinced that should ABE wins, he will attract any project to Ogoni as such was not done even under Ameachi? Has Abe demonstrated that capacity of leadership that can attract development to Ogoni?

He denied Khana /Gokana Model Secondary School.

He is known for political desperation for it is on record that Sen. Lee Meaba escaped death planned for him during the PDP senatorial primaries which he contested with Magnus Abe in 2011.

He was at the front burner among those who led the military into Ogoni on February 22nd and 23th and this resulted in the death of innocent Ogonis and non-Ogoni residents in Bori.

There may be some of his little achievements in Ogoni, which do not commensurate with the positions he has held in the name of Ogoni and therefore, should not be the only one who should be taking the lead in occupying juicy position from Ogoni without developing Ogoni.

With this level of betrayal, is it not VERY necessary we try another person? It is on the basis of this that we are calling on all true sons of Ogoni to vote out Sen. Magnus Abe. But in voting him out, we must remember to send another true Ogoni man and that man is the distinguished Sen. Olaka Nwogu. League of Ogoni Patriots page.

Gusau residents groan over increase in price of sachet water

Residents of Gusau in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State are groaning over increase in the price of sachet water.

A cross section of people interviewed by Community News, maintained that the 100 per cent increase had made it difficult for them to buy a bag of sachet water.

While speaking with Community News, a respondent, Mallam Lawali Birnin Ruwa, said: “I am a pensioner and it is now three months since I was paid my pension.

‘So, where will I get N100 to buy a bag of sachet water everyday?” he queried.

Findings revealed that a sachet of pure water formerly sold at N5 is now N10, while the price of a bag of pure water rose from N50 to N100.

In a related development, the Chairman, Gusau Local Government Area, Ibrahim Umar Tanko, has decried the increase in the price of sachet water.

Speaking with newsmen in an interview shortly after addressing sachet water vendors in Gusau, the council boss said the increase in the price of sachet water had impacted negatively on the people of Gusau and environs.

He stated that as leaders elected to serve the people and protect their interests, they would not fold their arms and allow a few persons to cause disaffection in the community.

He called on the water vendors to reverse their decision by reducing the cost to considerable and acceptable price or face the wrath of law.

He advised them to reduce a bag of sachet water from N100 to N70 or N60, while a sachet should remain N5.

However, a water vendor, named Hamisu, attributed the increment to the rising cost of raw materials and heavy levy placed on water vendors by government, saying, “it is a painful decision that we have to make.

Thisday exposes Lai Mohammed : publishes the portion of the interview where he said economy had overpowered Buhari’s government

*The relevant portion of the statement from where our story derived is somewhat different. Below is the excerpt beginning with the question by the interviewer.

Q: The free fall of the Naira in the last three weeks has been very discomforting and a lot of people are asking a lot of questions and some people even say wow, it has never been so bad. Has government been able to discover (the source of) this untoward development?

Lai Mohammed: I think it is clear why the naira is today in a free fall. You see, what are the factors that determines the exchange of the naira? It is your export and import; your trade balance and the general economy. Unfortunately we have not been fortunate in any of these, which is about 70 percent of all our total earnings. Before now, oil was selling for about N100 per barrel; today it is about N30 per barrel. And if you look at the cost of production, it has remained about the same.

We have lost about 70 percent of all our income and not only was oil responsible for all our income, it was also responsible for about 90 percent of all our foreign exchange, which makes between 90 -80 percent of our source of foreign exchange.

And naturally there will be more pressure on the Naira and less dollars and more naira chasing the dollars and now look at the balance of trade – it is negative. What do we do with trading and how much did we buy from Britain, for instance, and how they buy from us,. Unfortunately, it is negative. We take more from them than they take from us. If a country suddenly loses about 80 percent for its source of forex, clearly that currency will be in trouble.

The only way out is what the government is doing, which is strengthening the economy, diversifying it, plugging all the loopholes and making sure that only the essential things are imported. It will be extremely difficult, no doubt, but we are also in a state of emergency economically. You see, take for instance, your earnings reduced from N100 to N30 per month, something will have to give way…like relocating to a smaller house and I mean this is a reality.

The fact that the government is even still managing this situation, I give credit to the government, because the situation is completely beyond their control, and this is where people have been mischievous…

Today we live in a global community, Nigeria cannot determine the price of oil or gas. And that is why the presiident has gone spending countless nights lobbying, rallying other oil-exporting countries on how do we stabilize the oil price….

The programme was aired on FRCN’s Radio Link

Buildings affected included Andy Craft Vocational Centre and a customary court. At least 15 vehicles were completely razed in the inferno that was still being battled by the Lagos State Fire Service at about 8pm.

The fire was caused by a tanker loaded with 33,000 litres fuel. Tragedy struck after the tanker veered off its lane and rammed into Tapa street, with a deafening sound, spilling its content on the ground. Time was 6pm.

This was immediately followed by fire which first engulfed the training centre and thereafter spread to the court. Residents scampered in different directions for safety while motorists abandoned their vehicles.

Everton midfielder Gareth Barry stated on Sunday that Chelsea striker Diego Costa did not bite him during the Merseyside club’s 2-0 FA Cup quarterfinal victory on Saturday.

“Seen a lot of talk about the incident involving me and Diego Costa in the game last night,” Barry wrote on the Fanzai app. “For the record Diego did not bite me.”

“Diego spoke to club officials after the game and expressed regret over his reaction to the challenge from Gareth Barry that led to his red card,” said a Chelsea statement on Twitter.

“But Diego was also very clear that he did not bite him at any point during that altercation.”

Nigeria’s former Aviation minister, Femi Fani Kayode has reacted on the recent call by the senate leader, Ali Ndume, who raised the motion of arresting the former president, Goodluck Jonathan over the Arms deal saga.

Ndume in his call, lamented that if Jonathan is found guilty of the charge, that he should be arrested and prosecuted. Reacting to the call, the former minister challenged the senate leader by explaining to him that the former President had done anything wrong and does not deserve to be probe.

Read below on what he wrote:

“For example, Senator Ndume called for Jonathan’s arrest. This is a shameful and unnecessary contribution and if Ndume feels that Jonathan has done anything wrong, he should present the evidence to the authorities and the public, rather than try to demonise the man.

“Even where mistakes have been made, I am a strong believer in loyalty and I will stand by the man that I campaigned for during the presidential election, who is also now the leader of our party. Jonathan should be treated with respect and dignity at all times and he should always be given the benefit of the doubt

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared declared the mass movement of Rivers people already translated into an army of voters will defeat the illegal rigging army imported by failed Former Governor Chibuike Amaechi.

He described Chibuike Amaechi as a trader who has the spirit of selling everything in sight. He , however, stated that the former governor will never be allowed to sell Rivers State.

Addressing thousands of the people of Rivers South-East senatorial district during the Grand Finale of the PDP Campaign Rally in Bori on Monday, Governor Wike said the APC’S reliance on soldiers for rigging would be defeated as the people will defend their hard-earned freedom.

He said that Amaechi’s technique of killing Ogoni people by tagging them as militants before the Army would be rewarded with electoral defeat on March 19.

According to him : “Why are the leaders of the APC running away from election after their victory at the tribunal? They have refused to campaign. All they do is to boast that that they will flood the state with soldiers who will rig the elections.

“We have a mass movement of Rivers people who represent an army of voters. They will subdue the rigging Army imported by Amaechi “.

Speaking further, he said : “All those celebrating the killing of Ogoni people will face the wrath of the people during the rerun elections ”

He particularly berated Magnus Abe for refusing to defend his Ogoni kinsmen because of his desperation for political power. He said it was unfortunate that Magnus Abe joined Amaechi to describe the 28 Ogoni people murdered in cold blood as militants.

The governor assured the people of Rivers South-East senatorial district that he will construct critical roads, hospitals and schools in the area beginning next month.

He noted that the Sakpenwa-Bori road and Opobo link road will be awarded in April.

Governor Wike called on the people to vote PDP candidates so as to entrench development in the state without distraction.

Presenting party flags to candidates for the rerun elections, Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus said PDP has been winning all rerun elections because Nigerians are tired of suffering due to the failure of the APC to keep her promises.

He advised President Muhammadu Buhari to watch Minister of Transportation, Amaechi closely as he has already started claiming the position of Commander in Chief of the Armed forces.

Former Minister of Trade and Investment, Chief Kenneth Kobani said that Ogoni people will vote PDP candidates on Saturday , March 19. He warned that no soldier would be allowed to rig elections in the area no matter the intimidation.

He said the Ogoni people hold the Minister of Transportation and Magnus Abe responsible for the murder of Ogoni people by soldiers .

Also speaking, Senator Lee Maeba said since 1999 Rivers South-East senatorial district has always voted PDP. He said the March 19 elections will also be won by the PDP.

Thousands of PDP members from Opobo /Nkoro, Gokana, Oyigbo, Eleme, Tai, Khana and Andoni Local Government Areas attended the mega-rally.

Highpoint of the occasion was the defection of two former Council Chairmen and their supporters from APC to PDP.

Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central, says Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, is “thinking of removing President Muhammadu Buhari” from office in 2019.

In a chat in the March edition of The Interview magazine, Sani advised el-Rufai to “face his job and stop putting eyes on the presidency”.

He accused El-Rufai of ruling like an emperor, promising to give him war or peace, whichever he chooses.

“It would be counter-productive for the governor to start thinking of evicting Buhari in 2019 to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he told the magazine.

“El-Rufai should do his job and stop putting his eyes on the presidency.”

The lawmaker and the governor have been at loggerheads for reasons not known to the public, making the Kaduna state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to suspend Sani.

Dangiwa Umar, former military governor of Kaduna, also spoke in the edition, referring to Adams Oshiomohle, Edo sate governor; Edwin Clark and Tony Anenih, chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as “traitors.”

Responding to a question on the fortunes of former President Goodluck Jonathan after he was defeated in March, Umar said: “I compare them (Oshiomohle and co) to insects that cling to flowers. They are attracted by the nectar rather than by the beauty of the flower.

“Governor Adams Oshiomohle, who generously praised Jonathan as a true democrat, suddenly turned into his most virulent critic.”

Umar revealed that he advised Jonathan to sack his service chiefs during his days as acting president, but the former president was too confused and agitated to act

Gov. Ortom declares war on opposition, media

By Yemi Itodo

Can somebody call Pastor Samuel Ortom to order! Why is this man allergic to criticism and opposition? The man is not only anti-people; he is equally anti media.

The other time it was National Mirror and Radio Benue he sued for N3bn during his campaign.

Recently, he also dragged former Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav to Court and claimed the sum of N1bn for criticising his government.

Few weeks ago, he sacked the Editor-in-Chief of his newspaper, Oracle Newspaper, Iorliam Shija for praising Gabriel Torwua Suswam in one of his editorials.

Today, it’s the turn of the Social Media Activist and member of PDP Social Media team, Comrade Bemgba.

Information reaching me from Makurdi, Benue State capital says Gov. Ortom has charged the poor man to Court and claiming N1bn damage over a publication on Zebra website.

The poor innocent Bemgba had shared a publication on Zebra website last month, where the photographs of the secret properties bought by the Governor and members of his govt were revealed.

The PDP man was later picked by Members of SARS while he dropped off his children in school and has since been reminded in their custody unjustly.

Let it be known to all and sundry that the Governor is highly intolerable and a Tyrant.

My advice to him is that he should stock enough tax payers money to take all of us to Court, because we won’t be tired of criticism.

In an advanced and civil society, the government appreciates criticism as unassailable ingredient for social engineering and healthy democracy.

Anybody who doesn’t want to be criticised is not man enough to hold any public office.

Perhaps, such a man should have been befitted in a motor park, where AGBEROS exchange blows for criticism.Read more

I DON’T HAVE A GRAVE

By Oche Ngbede

It all started in the dead of the night, I was awaken by a mixture of wailing, shouts, gun shots and explosions, while I was still trying to figure out what was going on, my father rushed to the room where I and my siblings where sleeping, he was followed by my mother, he lifted me up to my feet, scooped 4 year old Ene while my mother carried 2 year old Ochanya, my father then reached for his machete behind the door and led us out of the house.
Outside the house people were running in different directions, their cries being accompanied by distant gunshots, these gunshots were rapid and sounded very different from the sounds we hear when the village hunters go hunting, these gunshots shook the very ground upon which we stood.
My father led us towards the yam farm behind the house, we were followed by other villagers, as we hurried through the farm my mother tripped over a dead body and fell, Mr Oguche who was right behind her stopped and helped her back to her feet, as he did he asked “A m’onya kum mla ayi kum?” Have you seen my family? My mum replied “um um.. unmuwa no” no I haven’t.
As we continued down the path my 6years old pair of legs began to feel weak from running, jumping and tripping over dead bodies, at this point the gunfire was becoming louder, I couldn’t tell if we were running away from or towards our attackers, my father must have thought the same as he stopped and gestured for us to do same. I peeked into the darkness, strained my eyes and just ahead I could make out a large number of women and children running towards our direction, coming from our supposed escape route, their numbers dwindling as they approached, behind them were gun wielding herdsmen who cowardly shot them in their backs, those who were not fortunate to die from the gunshots where butchered like animals.
As if on cue we all turned around and ran back to the direction we came from, only this time there were more dead bodies to trip on and more cries to deafen an already deaf ear. The house which we just left was now proudly wearing a crown of yellow flames, so too was every other house in the village, each threatening to out-burn the others like they were competing in an ‘inferno olympics’.
We turned and headed towards the stream but just as we did, four men appeared in front of us clutching military grade riffles, my father’s machete was no match to these weapons, he was not even given the option of surrender as it is done in civilized warfare, the machine guns roared in unison, my father fell on his back, his gaze fixated at me, it seem to be saying “I am sorry I couldn’t protect you and the rest of the family”. Beside my father’s lifeless body lay his guts and 4 year old Ene who was also not breathing.
My mother who was expecting another child in a few months lay faced down, her body drowning in a pool of family blood, her hand still holding unto 2 year old Ochanya who was crying. One of the assailants stepped forward, lifted his military styled boots and stamped it on Ochanya’s little head scattering her infant thoughts; she stopped crying.
He bent down, picked my father’s machete stepped up to me and with a single stroke he slit my throat.

I don’t have the pride of owning a grave, not one of my family member is worthy of that ‘luxury’, I have been left in the open for the vultures to feed on and for cattle who are worth more than humans to trample on.
The dead do not have a voice, we cannot argue. How then do I prove to you that I am dead? Yes you, you who said I am not dead just because I DON’T HAVE A GRAVE.

UTME: JAMB raises alarm over sponsored protest by blackmailers

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has uncovered plans by a faceless group under the aegis of education consultants to stage a protest in Lagos over some challenges in the conduct of the ongoing Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

A statement issued on Monday night in Abuja by the Head of Media in JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, entitled: “Protest By Education Consultants”, said the protests were being sponsored by some proprietors whose examination centres were lacking in all the indices needed for a successful Computer Based Test (CBT) examination.
The statement reads: “The attention of the Board has been drawn to a planned protest (tomorrow, Tuesday in Lagos) over the Board’s activities by individuals who called themselves education consultants. JAMB has called for calm and advised candidates to always avail themselves of the opportunity provided by the board through it public complaints unit to vent their grievances and not to allow blackmailers to use them for any selfish interest.

“The Board had approved centres provided by these individuals to be used for the 2016 exercise but unfortunately couldn’t as the centres were found to be lacking in all the indices needed for a successful CBT examination. This was discussed with these proprietors and they showed understanding as they witnessed the difficulties the Board went through to run even a session in their centres.

“It’s surprising that these same proprietors will turn around to organised candidates to protest over our activities. We are not perfect as an organisation but working hard to ensure that Nigerian education is better than it is, we have taken the risk to do the unthinkable so as to change the paradigm.

We will continue to call on all Nigerians to give us the benefits of doubt and with their collective support we will give them one of the best CBT globally. Its no news that the worst CBT is far better than the best Paper and pencil Test. At least, the era of candidates pouring acid on staff, bolting with question papers into the bush and all manners of unthinkable embarrassing acts are gone.

“We will continue to show leadership in the conduct of public examination in Africa and beyond. Again all candidates with genuine complaints are urged to visit any of our offices nationwide.”

THE entire Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State was thrown into confusion on Sunday, as some irate youths burnt down a police station for protesting the operation of men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigeria Police in the area.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that men of the NDLEA had strormed the area to arrest suppliers and users of a popular illicit drug known as goskolo and other dangerous drugs on Sunday evening, but were initially resisted by hoodlums in the vicinity.

It was leant that when the situation was becoming tense the police was drafted into the area to maintain law and order and also to help the NDLEA and local security outfit trying to fish out the undesirable elements behind the illicit business.

Nigerian Tribune further learnt that after the police had calmed the situation, the youths in the area, who alleged that four of them were shot, mobilised and descended on the police station in the area and set it on fire and later returned before daybreak to pull down the remnant of the fire incident.Read more

Office of the Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Information and Communication

14th March 2016

The President of the Peoples Republic of China

Thro:

The Ambassador,

Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China

Plot 302/303, Central Business Area,

Abuja,

Your Excellency,

Grave Threat to Peace and Stability in Rivers State, Nigeria

I write on behalf of the Government and people of Rivers State, Nigeria, to inform you respectfully of the imminent danger posed to the peace and stability of Rivers State, by the actions and provocative utterances of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the run-up to the re-run legislative polls billed for the 19th of March 2016 in Rivers State, leaders of the APC, notably, Mr Dakuku Peterside, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, and others, have resorted to intimidatory tactics and are openly inciting violence against members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and anyone who holds a different political perspective in the state.

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s judgment recently affirming Governor Nyesom Wike as the duly elected governor of Rivers State, among other PDP victories, the APC has ratcheted up its dangerous rhetoric.

In a widely publicized media interview, Chief John Oyegun the National Chairman of the APC has castigated the integrity of the Justices of the Supreme Court, declaring, “Something is fundamentally wrong in the judiciary”.

Oyegun also made the bizarre suggestion that all oil-producing states of the Niger Delta region were prized assets to be acquired at all costs by the APC.

“We have lost very important resource-rich states to the PDP. No matter how crude oil prices have fallen, it is still the most important revenue earner for the country”, Chief Oyegun said.

In Chief Oyegun’s company was Mr Dakuku Peterside, the defeated Rivers State APC governorship candidate, who seemed to use the meeting to incite the military and the Federal Government against the people of Rivers State.

Among the demands of Dakuku Peterside and the Rivers State APC was the purge of alleged sympathizers “of the immediate-past federal government administration in the leadership of security agencies, especially in the Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.”

This absolutist politics of the APC is not only a direct threat to democracy in Nigeria, but seems to be a manifesto for the open politicization of the security forces of the country.

Dakuku Peterside’s irresponsible call for a politically-motivated “purge” in the security forces will spell disaster for Nigeria.

In a series of media interviews that began with an appearance on “Focus Nigeria”, a TV programme on African Independent Television (AIT) in Abuja, and with radio stations in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister for Transportation in Nigeria, continues to use language that is both inciting and dangerously divisive.

There are media reports, not denied even by the APC, that Mr. Rotimi Amaechi who has threatened to “do battle” with the PDP and the people of Rivers State during the polls, was accompanied into Port Harcourt last week by over 500 fully-armed military special forces.

Mr Amaechi has himself publicly threatened to “flood” every polling unit in Rivers State with soldiers in a bid to rig the elections in favour of the All Progressives Congress.

There are Supreme Court judgments that expressly forbid the use of the military in election matters, and at the polling booth. Mr Amaechi’s threat to inject the military directly into the electoral process in Rivers State is therefore alarmingly dangerous and illegal.

The homes of key leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party are being routinely raided and vandalized by Mr Amaechi’s goons. And plans have already been perfected to arrest all leaders of the PDP in Rivers State 48 hours to the elections on the 19th of March.

Mr Rotimi Amaechi is an influential cabinet Minister in the administration of President Mohammadu Buhari of Nigeria. Our repeated appeals to the President to call Mr Amaechi to order have therefore gone unheeded.

With a population of 4.5 million people, Rivers State is the oil and gas metropolis of Nigeria. The eruption of violence in a State with strong multi-ethnic fault lines could cripple Nigeria’s ailing economy, and reverberate across the country’s borders.

We therefore call on the Government of the Peoples Republic of China to urgently initiate and maintain pressure on the Federal Government of Nigeria to allow free, fair and violence-free elections in Rivers State on the 19th of March 2016.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr. Austin Tam-George.

Commissioner for Information and Communication,

3rd Floor, Podium Block, Rivers State Secretariat Complex,

Port Harcourt,

Rivers State, Nigeria.
